A POET'S EPITAPH

John M. Hastings

what do poets leave behind?

mournful thoughts
      feelings wrought
            with love abandoned
                  life unfulfilled

or lover's wine-wet lips
      devoured
            in fleeting moments
                  stopping time

or peace and grace
      to blanket hate
            write calming thoughts
                  for tortured souls

we etch our words
      upon the cosmos
            ask it how
                  we came to be

to truly love...
      to fully laugh...
            to deeply cry...
                  to finally die
