SWEPT

by Marianne Paul

Learn river from inside out flow through the middle
instead of walk along the edges

read water like a child reads print - decode the
     symbols on the page
find meaning beneath the surface

leave behind the calm eddy, cross into swift waters
     where nothing
stays still: aim the bow one o'clock upstream peel
     outward

lean deep into crescent moon, let the current sweep
downstream through the arc of its own doing

water speaks volumes churns secrets tells of things
     hidden
body responds

hip and knee lift - paddle blade arcs wide
kayak slips past boulders above and below

the waterline

From ABOVE AND BELOW THE WATERLINE
