Trading Sand Dollars

by Debbie Okun Hill
Ontario, Canada

They flip a gold coin
Two sisters taking turns
Tossing loonies into ocean blue
Catching summer's glint
Like the sun blistering
On white beach skin
Their arms waving
Blonde pigtails in flight
Losing stock of
Their father's cash
Spending ticker-tape time
Slide-kicking sand
Over wiggling toes
Scooping quartz crystals
With plastic shovels
In red pails
Reveling in their exchange
For sand dollars
The money of mermaids
Washed up from water's deep

From Tower Poetry, 56:1
