FREE NOW FROM OBLIGATIONS

by Helen Fitzgerald Dougher
(1911-2006)
Canada

Free now from obligations to the past,
To death alone obliged, forgiven all...
The things I cherished, knew could never last
I do renounce and never shall recall,
The human trifling things to which I clung,
Who knew no giving-up when I was young,
Surrender royally, a single grand
And final gesture (though ignoble still,
Giving what can't be kept) with open hand,
While the birds twitter morning at the sill
And there is nothing left but the Unknown,
The mystery I shall explore alone.
