new almanac

by Joseph A. Farina
Ontario, Canada

i used to mark the seasons
by subtle changes in the air
the flight of geese against greying skies
the rustle and color of leaves —
the smell of sun on earth warming
the chill and frost on certain mornings —
now I know the changes
by the covers of catalogues
sent to me by SEARS and CANADIAN TIRE
in plenty of time
for me to co-ordinate my fashion and my car
to each succeeding season …
