Dishdrain, by Patricia Peackock-Evans

Thanksgiving Dinner

by Jeff Seffinga

We gather at tables in kitchen and dining room
with a lavish selection of foods

give thanks for another season of plenty
the gifts of abundance and growth

rejoice with the living, comfort the grieving
tempering our actions with love

and share in the generous meal set before us
united in the kinship of grace

We remark on the crimson glow of tomatoes
the aromas and textures of meats

roots tasting of earth, leaves greened by the sun
bread holding the baker’s soft touch

Wine with its sparkle, rich sauces that pour
the tang of sweet tartlets and pies

hold us together in peaceful contentment
as the laughter of evening grows dim

By twos or by handfuls we step into night
we call out our blessings and thanks

The tables are bare, the kitchen rests silent
rinsed dishes drain into the sink
