THE PORTRAIT

I’ll tell you the story of a woman
Spectacles perched on her nose
Chin on hand, her face in repose
Dreaming of art or her man

Her self sketch shows determination
Confidence in her talents
Life lived with colour and balance
Offering her gifts to the nation

In those eyes, what we see
Hidden behind protective lenses
Steadily looking, assesses
Life as it should be  

Perhaps she is thinking of her loved one
The man she chose to share her life
Happy to be his wife
Content with what she has done
