Polar Bear and Cubs, Barbara Sachs

URSA MADONNA

by Jeff Seffinga

safe in the shadow of a mother’s breast
he dozes. worry winds don’t ruffle his fur
no fear sounds in his ear. comfort and trust
are the thick insulation against tomorrow.

a mother’s example teaches her the way
to stand, to shape the way she will face
the world approaching her. proud and brave
she still relies on the strength of a shoulder.

solid as bedrock strong as the hills her stance
rumbles responsible. the young have clambered
from helpless and blind to be separate characters.
they are prepared to step forward and to hold fast
to the teachings of mother and nature, and shake
the pleasure and pain of living between their teeth.
