Out of Control, by Helen Ness

A Growing Thirst

by Jennifer Tan

These chubby rosettes
with their cabbage faces
stick out like hitchhikers
thumbing for a ride.

Their allotted spot is a pot
of a warm and earthy glow
a holding place where roots bore
to hide their unruly shame.

These stuffed and jaded jewels
desiring to be nearer
to the source of attraction
spread out a smooth escape.

These succulents thirsting to grow
out of the storage
of solace and peace
unsatisfied with empty tranquility
sneak to straggle further away
learn to bend the rule
as nature allows them to.
