Northern Beaver Pond, by Janusz Wrobel*

QUIESCENCE

by Eleanore Kosydar

Imperceptibly, dawn eases over the dead landscape
gradually erasing night’s black to grey, pale
rosy glow stealing
lightly  across
the untroubled water of the beaver pond

Standing erect in the still water,
drowned by felled bodies of their own kin
rise the slim trunks of skeletal trees elegant
in their demise, untroubled by the stillness of death

Beneath the surface, submerged seeds rest
beside the drowned feet of the still-standing trees
All is quiet in the dawning light as patient land
prepares for death’s transmutation into life
