AMONG THE WOMEN

by Rhoda Hassmann
Ontario, Canada

I'm lost
lost without a pair of hands
in a world of women
cooing, cooing

No hands to bake
or knit
play bridge
put flowered borders on kitchen walls
make wreaths for my front door

I'm lost in a world of women
whose hands flutter
comfort
take hold of one another
pray in Easter finery
brush their daughters' hair

I've no means to show
all those soft tender women
my own tense
constricted
limbs

Lost in the world of women
cooing, cooing
