WHEN JUST THE
MECHANICS OF LIVING
AINT QUITE ENOUGH

by Jeff Seffinga
Ontario, Canada

When it takes more
than light and shape
to define the world around me,
more than the unrelenting lens
of a camera that will not lie;

When all the day's colour is
captured by the eyes and
transmitted to the brain,
all movement and song
caught fast by the pulse and
stops there;

When the space
between object and image
is too broad to leap,
and spirit will not connect
abstract to physical;

I need sustenance:

an order of Oscar Peterson's piano,
Odetta's contralto on the side,
a helping of your poems
for dessert.
