AT THE SUPERMARKET

by Betty Sanders Garner
Ontario, Canada

She picked the rosy apple
from the bin, inhaled its sweet
aroma, turning it over and over
in her hand, her fingers
smoothing the polished surface

Suddenly remembering herself
she glanced up, took in the price
tag and quickly returned
the apple to the bin

I wanted to call her back -
give her a bag full of apples

but the prideful set
of her shoulders

held me back
