Return

by James Deahl
Ontario, Canada

Early in May a soft wind
slips unnoticed from the south
to set our forsythia free,
unlock the lavish magnolias
brimming pink and silver.

All over town
trees open their green day,
a flush creeps branch to branch
where warm sun breathes.

Wild grasses return from their knitted roots
as moisture rises
to find the level where
life begins.

And suddenly I stand
gaze into the white
heart of spring.
