RESIDUE

by Helen Middleton Amos
Ontario, Canada

We built a snow fort, long and long ago,
One idle afternoon when we were young.
All bundled up and laughing, cheeks aglow,
Exuberant bear hugs when our task was done.
Love blossomed all that magic winter through
In warmth of fire and the lilt of song,
My life took on new meaning, shared with you,
And all the while our little fort stood strong.
Then gradually warm sun and bluer skies
Prevailed. As Nature blithely carried on
I saw a strange withdrawal in your eyes,
And soon, like you, our little fort was gone.
Life swept me up, and though I play my part,
A trace of winter lingers in my heart.
