BUDS OF MAPLE

by Barry Butson
Ontario, Canada

The buds on the many maples
around us here
are big as
erect nipples
and red as candies
on your moist lips.
They hold within them summer
and all that follows.

They contain even
room for rebirth,
on another day like this
next spring.
