TWO OLD CHAIRS

by Laura Edith Baldwin
Ontario, Canada

Two old chairs that grace my living room
have rich histories. Of the pair, the lady’s
has arms, the gentleman’s does not: meant
to ease the sword in those times worn by men.
Given to my grandfather in payment for a debt
long ago, they have now come down to me.

They emanate the stories of men and women
who enjoyed their comforts. They remember
bustles, hoop skirts, and lace; fancy waistcoats,
laced boots, and a parade of uniforms from wars
fought through the centuries. But did these chairs
wage their own battles or exist in harmony?

Get rid of that old stuff, my brother urged me,
Get something new and smart! He couldn’t feel
their spirits reaching out to touch my heart
with hope that I would cherish these two chairs.
