WINTER

by Margaret Saunders
Ontario, Canada

Autumn's blaze of colour
long gone
we are in the midst of winter
a winter so cold
if I had the urge to spit
I would crack the pavement

And now the snowflakes
(their second time around)
piling thigh high
drawing the neighbours outdoors

hunched over shovels
we become a team
our cloudy breaths
reacquainting us
with each other
