Reflections of a Stilted Man

by Norman Brown

something of a paradox    this:
an artist’s dummy deep in thought
pondering what I wonder  —
his childhood forest home before
the woodsman came
the sweet remembrance of a love long lost
or the world which lies before him
like a land of dreams.

well Dummy
you’re no Aristotle contemplating
the Bust of Homer that’s for sure
your head’s a solid block
of varnished oak
no ars poetica or epic songs
only blank pages where polished
fingers move
your knees articulated
but your thoughts aren’t

silent bleeding and
four empty bowls  —
you might as well be a poet
