Alison, by Katherine MacDonald

That Sad Woman

by Rhoda Hassmann

That sad woman
still beautiful, just
about to fade
reminds me of us,
sisters and cousins;
all once black-haired,
thick tresses
over our shoulders —

Black Irish, they called us
as we emerged from generations
of madness, depression, alcoholism

some of us sane
others not

Our long hair’s now cut short;
We carefully wrap our scarves
to hide our various flaws,
yet some of us
are still full-lipped
dark-eyed, red-cheeked

but always hiding the sadness
of our earlier lives
