Doing the Rounds
in a Japanese Garden

Cry of the cuckoo —
invitation to stroll

Curved-bridge equators cross circular ponds
reflected layers of bamboo weaving in the breeze
Bold fish stripe the water with orange and gold
Lotus flowers dot the surface with lemon and rose
eluding outstretched fingers

Granite boulders, set like planets, grace pebbled paths
surround a regal banyan, mushroom with necklaces
Sun spotlights chrysanthemums
golden buttons in concentric wheels of green

Ancient pine, stately at the north pole
prevails high above the myriad pools
while cicadas sing across their liquid longitudes
