The Visionary, Beverly Rippon*

VILLANELLE
FOR A VISIONARY

by Joan Sutcliffe

Where kingfisher dives into midnight blue
to smash the hours into splinters of glass
the prophetess sees visions coming true.

The future breaks open as eyes peer thru
the mysteries woven in strands of grass
where kingfisher dives into midnight blue.

While pondering on waters thick as glue
where images vaporous rise and pass
the prophetess sees visions coming true.

That gaze discerns omens long overdue
of destinies lost as changes amass
where kingfisher dives into midnight blue.

Where old dreams long held with passion accrue
where incense smoulders in symbols of brass
the prophetess sees visions coming true.

On horizons dawning in golden hue
beyond the darkness, the horror, the crass
where kingfisher dives into midnight blue
the prophetess sees visions coming true.
