A TRAVELLER'S GUIDE
TO IRELAND
Connemara, County Galway

by Leslie Casey

Come upon the ponies
standing motionless, at home
in the grey coastal rain.
Here too the stone ruins of a house,
outside walls intact, doors and windows
front to back giving light
a short-cut to the distant mountains.
Two ponies at the entrance, equidistant
on either side, their chestnut heads
raised and in the window another. A tableau —
poised as though history could once again
stir them to warrior: the celtic ponies
drawing chariots into battle. Ancient
blood and stories, they appear content,
rooted in instinct, the stillness of green and rock
and time bringing everything on its own.
Leave the gate open when you go,
nothing calls to them but the silence.
Rain rising into mist.
