Dodge Flower Bed, by Donna Ibing

A BOY AND HIS DODGE

by Chris Butler

Mathew scrambles onto driver's seat
clutching ring of imagined keys,
unconcerned that aged axle
has succumbed to grasp of weeds

Though truck tires have gone flat
and the windscreen's dense with dust
Matt turns over long-seized engine
and shifts gears jammed with rust

He loves to race quick bumblebees
across broad wildflower circuit,
inspired by distant checkered flag
waved with glee by Mister Cricket

Daisies bow beneath low fender
Corncobs thunder down on roof
He scatters surprised pheasants
Darting snakes hiss, " How uncouth!"

Mathew boomerangs through final turn
and nearly slides into ravine
He leaves angry bumblebees choking
on the fumes of his machine

He screeches into winner's circle
where grazing cows moo their praise
He climbs up on hood to take a bow
and celebrate first place

The bumblebees come roaring up,
sore losers seeking victor,
but truckbed is full of tasty flowers,
so instead bees feast on nectar
