Escarpment

by Paddy Chitty

Years have etched
deep furrows in your brow
Your face, quilt stitched
lined and pocked
belies a past
of rape
and war

Your skin leathered
by snow and sun
sanded by winds
and winter's breath
has beauty
that only age
can show

                    Newly emerged
                    a Mourning Cloak
                    suns in your spring smile
                    You rise in lacy shade
                    wildflowers clutched
                    to your chest
fern and lichen at your feet
