Midnight Spell

by Eleanore Kosydar

In the depth of winter
and the long night
a few large snowflakes
float a palpable hush
upon slumbrous mountains

All is quiet
in the veiled lunar light
but for the distant ringing
of a church bell

Nevertheless
a luminescent strangeness
appears to unsettle
the chill air

Somewhere Jacob
ascends his ladder while
in a dark corner of town
I do calisthenics
and bay at the blurry, haloed moon
